Thoughts on Thursday – Love

Who or What are you??

I don’t mean are you human.  Today I am referring to those roles I wrote about yesterday.  Although we shouldn’t define ourselves by them, we can be proud of what they mean and stand for in our lives.

It takes a lot of effort on our part to maintain all the different roles we play in our own lives.  I heard it said once that you can only EFFECTIVELY maintain 5 roles at any given time.  Boy am I glad I don’t have to wear all my hats at once.

What are the 4 roles in your life that you value the most?  I believe that these 4 are the cornerstones to every decision we make and thing we do.  The other 1 I believe is one that rotates constantly depending on the hour/day/week/month.  For example, I only have my “Church Clerk” hat on when I am actively participating in Church activities.  Otherwise, I might have my “Chorus Singer” or my “Softball Player (YUP, oldest active player on the team now)” hat on.

This gives us the flexibility to do the things that are important (4) and to still feel like we have some control.

What’s Up on Wednesday – What do you do?

When someone asks you what you do, how do you respond??  Do you give them your JOB title, your vocation, your name or a combination of them all?

I was thinking today about how we are defined by the roles we have in our lives.  Mom/Dad, Daughter/Son, Sister/Brother, Aunt/Uncle, Cousin, Friend, employee, employer, Member of a group/organization etc…

Why is it that we define ourselves by the things we do?  I don’t think I know how else I would answer the question, but I was thinking that it just seems odd.

This is definitely a thought provoker.  I think I will spend some time over the next week thinking about this more.  Maybe I will have more insight, after your comments and a weeks worth of pondering.

Time Tip Tuesday – Email or Snail Mail??

Hello All,

In this day and age of instant everything I wanted to talk about the importance and relevance of the Postal Service.

On Friday, I told you about my friend that sends “Cake-Truffles” out for companies and people as a way for them to say thank you.  It made me stop and wonder, how much we rely on instant messaging (IM, Email, Facebook, Twitter etc…).  I remember when I was in school (yes, I know I am aging myself a little here) that our classroom (in MA) connected with another classroom (in IL) and we all had pen-pals for the school year.

The girl I connected with stayed my pen-pal and friend well into high-school.  It was always a joy when I got a letter in the mailbox (kids hardly ever got mail).  Even now as an adult, I look through the pile of mail and see if there is anything of a personal nature, before I even think about looking at the bills, ads etc…

The fact that a person takes the time to write a note (even if it’s on the inside of a pre-printed card) puts your address and a stamp on the envelope, and then sends it off in the mail should make our hearts full of Happiness.

When was the last time you did something like this for one of your friends.  I know you like them, but have you shown them how much lately?

Today’s Tip:  Take some time in the next week, to reconnect with a forgotten friend.  Write a letter, send a card, or maybe send a box of Cake-Truffles.  Just take a moment to reach out and think about the smile that will come across their face when they see a note from you.

Mindset Monday – Joy

When you think of Joy, what does it say to you.  Happiness, smiles, laughter are all depictions and feelings of Joy.

“Joy springs from within; no-one makes you joyous; you choose joyfulness” ~unknown

When we focus on being joyful,  we are more likely to see the things in our lives that bring us joy.  From as simple as the flowers growing wild in a field, to as elaborate as a garden planted with the utmost care and planning.

Joy can be ours to hold on to, if we choose to do so.  The choice is ours for the making.  SO, are you choosing to be joyful every day or are you letting your circumstances dictate the level of joy you feel??

We could all use to be joyful and spread the joy around.

Spirit Filled Sunday

Of all the days of the week, this has to be my absolute favorite.

As I sit here thinking of all of you that will be reading this, I am filled with gratitude for each and every one of you.  A short recap, I only started writing my blog in January of this year.  I have had my consistent days/weeks and some VERY inconsistent ones too.  But, you still stick around.

It fills my heart with happiness and my face has a smile when I think about you.  I hope you all have a marvelous Sunday and a wonderfully blessed week.

Mindset Monday – Is Gratitude overrated?

Happy Monday,

Gratitude is so often overlooked and underutilized.  I believe if we take the time to be grateful for everything we have in our lives (big and small), then we will begin to see more and more of those things showing up in our lives.

Oprah once said she keeps a gratitude journal in which she writes a minimum of 5 things every day for which she is grateful.  What a great way to not only stop and think, but a great way to reflect on the things that have happened to bring us to where we are.

I tried this routine once, and found that some days are easier than others.  There were some days I was grateful to have “kept my cool, and not lost my temper” and other days when I was grateful for things like the sun and the birds.  My gratitude spanned from one end of the spectrum to the other on most days.

So, my question is Gratitude overrated?!  Well, I believe not.  When we take the time to focus on things, we gain much in the way of clarity.  We can even be grateful for the challenges and obstacles we face.  They have much to teach us if we are willing to be grateful for them and learn from them.

What are you grateful for today?  Take a moment today to reflect and maybe start your own Gratitude Journal.
